The court ruling which stripped Daryl Vaz of his seat in parliament, and subsequently led to the resignation of Danville Walker as director of elections, due to their possession of dual citizenship, thrust the issue of dual citizenship onto the national agenda. A debate has ensued between proponents and opponents of the constitutional provision which provided the basis for the legal ruling. The discussion thus far lacks evidence to support either side of the argument. This paper investigates the central claims being made by both sides of the debate, and weighs them against the available evidence.
